My cousin, Walter, was the son of John W. Smart and Emma F. Byers. He attended the Portsmouth, New Hampshire schools and was employed at National Gypsum Company, the city's Highway Department and for 33 years at the Portsmouth Naval Shipyard as an electric welder retiring in 1957.

He was survived by his widow, Rachel Ida Trafton; a son, Walter John Smart of Portsmouth; 2 daughters, Mrs. Janet Caswell of West Springfield, MA; 2 sisters, Miss Ethel Smart and Mrs. Hazel Lear, both of Portsmouth; and 3 grandchildren.
